Welcome to "Through a Glass Darkly" - my blog about my service trip to Malawi, Africa.

I left Canada on December 30th for Blantyre, Malawi, AFRICA. I worked with Friends of Malawi Fellowship (FOMF), the organization headed by my aunt Phyllis Labrentz. I taught English language and literature, helping secondary high school students learn to read and write English well enough to pass the government exams.
During that time I was also kept busy teaching guitar, singing, and assisting my aunt.
I left Malawi on July 19th and returned to Canada on July 20th.

TRIP TO ZOMBA MOUNTAIN: PART 1

We went to Zomba Mountain on April 23rd.
Many more photos to come!

We live on the other side of that mountain.
Everything's packed on the head. I have yet to see a dolly in Malawi.
First glimpse of Zomba Mountain
Approaching Zomba
Little mosque on the prairie?
Mum wanted to stop and find out what those strange things were.
Those things on top were bigger than watermelons. They had little bumps all over them.
The vendor said they tasted kind of like watermelon.
It was way too big for the two of us, and Arnold didn't want to try it, so we didn't buy one.

The light shining through the leaves was glorious.

Sun Hotel on Zomba Mountain. There's a whole chain of these hotels.

The two Arnolds

It's not a soap bubble or an idea bubble: it's a patio light.

Chess, anyone?

Arnold Jr. He was anxious for his food to arrive.

Jemimah (pronounced "jeh-MEE-muh")

The lovely Isabel

Name this plant.
Its petals are rather thick and waxy looking.
It's about 3cm in diameter.
 Many more photos to come!

  1. Hi Inez,

Sounds like this was a nice day out for you. Loved your pictures, especially the sweet kids and that's a very nice one of you too. I think that pretty flower you took a photo of might be a Frangipani.
Meanwhile, back here in Quesnel, we had our first Farmer's Market of the season, today. Right across the street at The Legion, they had two fund raisers going on at the same time. Jim and I spent all morning and part of the early afternoon downtown and came back with a lemon meringue pie, a chocolate cake and a new house plant. I can't say no to fund raisers :)
I started my planting last week - pots only - in case the temp dips again & I have to bring them indoors overnight. I planted 3 pots of tri-colour marigolds, 2 pots of red California poppies, divided my light pink (indoor)African violet into five pots, planted 2 window boxes of Buttercrunch lettuce, planted 24 cucumber seeds and 16 Asian green beans into one large greenhouse flat. Now the waiting begins. Hoping to plant the cukes & bean seedlings out into the garden by the end of May and hoping to plant the rest of the garden (carrots, snow peas, green bush beans, green onions at that time too or maybe a week earlier. Still have to pick up a couple flats of pansy & petunia seedlings for my pots at the front of the house - probably next weekend. May is a busy month for gardening :)
Well, Inez, just wanted to catch you up on the goings on around the Spencer household. I'm sure you've seen the pics I've posted on FB about the other stuff so will say 'bye for now. Take care and God bless you. You, your family and your mission are in my prayers.

    1. Awhile back I bought 4 large clay pots from a neighbour woman. I planted marigolds from seed. Some came up and are now starting to get buds. I reseeded more to fill in the spaces. Marigolds repel bugs.
I also planted petunia seeds. They are so tiny! They didn't come up, so I've reseeded, using paper napkins as a type of seed tape. I really hope they come up. They are my favourite summer flower.
